Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is the only public garden in the continental United States fronting directly on the ocean. The mild maritime climate makes it a garden for all seasons.
Almost all the roses in The Heritage Rose Garden were discovered along roadsides and on old homesteads and ranches in Mendocino County. Two sisters, Virginia Hopper and Joyce Demits, scoured the Mendocino coast searching for plants and gathering cuttings at abandoned homesites. They have documented nearly 400 varieties of heritage roses throughout Northern California and established The Heritage Rose Garden at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.
