[From Beautiful American Rose Gardens, by Mary Tonetti Dorra, pp. 16-23: Mike's garden is the first one discussed in the book -- there're also a number of photos of the garden] 4,000 roses... in mid-June, his collection of old garden roses blooming in fabulous profusion is a sight to behold... The 2-1/4-acre property is made up of a series of garden "rooms," where Mike and Irene Lowe tend America's largest collection of the oldest rose classes: Damasks, Albas, Gallicas, Mosses, and Centifolias... it is also the growing grounds and nursery for Lowe's Own-Root Roses and has been for thirty years the center for Mike Lowe's successful rose hybridizing... Mike grow twenty-seven varieties of [Centifolias] and sicty-eight varieties of its sport, the equally rare Moss rose... ninety varieties of Bourbons... his favorite rose companions, yellow sedums [are] used as fillers between low-growing Miniature roses and early Polyantha roses.
