[From The Canadian Heritage Rose Garden: A New Rose Garden for our Capital, by Marlene Orton, pp. 39-40:] 9 June 2000: The Canadian Heritage Rose Garden opened at Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General, Ottawa, Canada... The garden was created to mark the 125th anniversary of Confederation, in 1992... [at the opening] the release of a new rose named in her [for the wife of Former Governor General Ramon Hnatyshyn, who was responsible for the formation and funding of the garden] honour, 'Gerda Hnatyshn'... There are 2 large beds devoted to Canada with roses planted in a timeline: 1608 -- the first French post was established at the site of Quebec City; 'Canadian White Star' -- symbolizing the appointment in 1952 of the first Canadian-born Governor General, Vincent Massey; 'Beauty of Leafland' representing 1885 -- the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway; 'Mountie' representing the formation of the Northwest Mounted Police in 1873.
