Ours is a very young garden, started from nothing in 2002. The area is quite beautiful abutting a State park, however with it has come a multitude of black spot, cercospora, powdery mildew; if it touches roses, we attract it!
And the deer love to meander around which makes gardening here a challenge to say the least. Yet, we are happy with the results. Slowly the plants are getting into the natural rhythm of things and beginning to assert their style. The front of the house being at true North holds Darlow's Enigma, that seems to laugh at the 2 to 3 hours of sun it gets, and the rest live either on the east side or in the back where the south wall is like a babies' nursery during the winter, the potted roses if the temperature hovers around the high 30s don't even bother to defoliate.
