Mike Gleason's Rose Gardens

Mike G. Do you per-chance have any photos of Touch of Venus that you could post on HMF? I am particularly interested in the bloom's later stages of development, and more particularly if there is any more pink showing in the center than in the earlier bloom stages, as seen in the three current HMF photos (two from Cliff and one from Beth). A verbal report of the amount of pink in the late bloom stages would be equally welcome. Thanks. Mike D., Ypsi. P.S. I still want to come visit your garden next summer. I have written down about two dozen of your roses that most interest me.

I'll look through my pics, but I do not think I took any of this last summer. It was the first year for this plant, I I'm not the best for getting out there and taking photo's.

Michael, I do not have a photo, but there are a few out here from Beth and Cliff that should be of use to you. Cliff's photo is also the one used by Roses Unlimited on their website. All pictures out here fairly represent what my blooms looked like last summer if that is any help to you.

I grow Touch Of Venus (my favorite white HT) in the mid desert in Southern California. I've never noticed any pink tints in the mature blooms.

Hey Mike Gleason--what is your opinion of this Yankee Doodle hybrid tea rose. I have a chance to purchase a bareroot for Spring 2008 planting at a good price and I was wondering if it is worth having or not.

Well if you like tall, full bushes with lots of flowers then you'll like this. Almost has constant blooms.

Wonderful garden! Seems like every time I look at a page of one of our roses, y'all have it too (and a lot more). Have to admit that I have checked your roses when considering new roses here. Figured it was time to thank you. Dave

Thanks Dave! Where are youn located? Let me know what you are looking at that I currently have. I also keep a nursery license up to date so I can make and distribute rooted cuttings.

We are in Billings, Montana. How do Alec's Red and Papa Meilland perform for you? They are the first that come to mind. I am always looking for fragrant reds. We don't have much room left but I have saved spots for those 2. Dave South central Montana - zone 4/5

I am kind of disappointed with Alec's Red, but it was a VERY small grafted rose last year from Hortico. I was very unsure of getting Papa Meilland because I heard it was terrible in the cold, but it has performed well above expectations. Andyes, it smells absolutely great! I thought you were diggerdave from Montana (from rose forum) but was not sure. My Papa is gragted, but really buried deep. I have not tested it for cuttings yet, but if you want to try one, I can take one at first bloom and send it to you by July. I do have some Corpus Christi that will be a year old come next spring I could also send you provided they make it through the winter. You can check out the pic I have at HMF. This rose is next to impossible to get.

Great insight on the various roses mentioned... It really would be wonderful if you could find the time to post you comment about your experience to the appropriate rose page. Wouldn't it be great to view the 'Alex's Red' page a read through a list comments from people from all over the world.
Please also consider a starting a garden journal to share your experiences.

Thank you, don't go to the trouble of rooting cuttings. Just hearing how they do for you helps. Yeah, I was Dave Boyd at GW for years until we had to register and I used the screen name diggerdave. Corpus Christi looks great. Haven't heard very much about it. So far.. it has been a very mild winter. It has only gotten down to -15°F and we had snow to pile on the roses. Dave

That's funny! -15°F is colder than it has gotten here in years!!! We have had only three days where the high for the day was below 32. I even had to move all of my 250+ cuttings out from the garage because it was so warm. I would not think you had heard of corpus Christi. Like a lot of roses, it was never patented, so it was not readily available. That and "Gardens of the World" were my two big acquisitions this year. GOTW is a HT from jack Christensen that is almost impossible to find. Someone in Calif. saw that I was looking for it and sent me some unrooted cuttings. In 2007 I am bound and determined that I am going to get Lucille Ball by hook or crook. I will not comment on my total disgust with nurseries that patent roses and then have no inclination to sell them! Mike, aka mgleason56 (on Roses forum)

Dave, Interested in trading some of your (guess which one) unrooted cuttings for a rooted cutting?

We did end up getting down to -20°F a couple times so it has been a normal winter.
I'll email you about the cuttings.
