No. 3 in the series of 1 to 4. Photographs by Keith Money

Peter Beales purpose in writing these booklets was "to illustrate a period of rose history when great advances were made towards the rose as we know it today." The Hybrid Tea had been born but a decade or two before this period and was, at that time, still called a Hybrid Perpetual. Floribundas, known then as Poly Pompons, also gained favor and were popular choices for massed bedding.

Not everything that was happening with roses at that time was necessarily a good thing. In attempting to come up with bigger and more brightly colored blooms, breeders were creating roses with increased susceptibility to disease, in particular, black spot. The main culprit was Rosa foetida which was used to introduce bright yellow and orange into the rose palette.

Beales' text for each rose is illustrated by a Keith Money color photograph. Although the book is over twenty years old, copies can be found through out-of-print or secondhand booksellers -- I found my copy through http://www.alibris.com.
