p. 70 ...rose breeding work was first taken up by the nurserymen in Bihar...B.S. Bhattacharji and his sons (A. M. Bhattacharji & S. M. Bhattacharji) at Deogarh...laid the foundation for rose breeding work in India.

p.75 ...the foreword of the book 'Rose Growing in the Tropics' (1959) by B.S. Bhattacharji, mentions that the main objective in his programme was 'to produce some of the best hybrid roses for warmer parts of the tropics'.

[From Rose Research in India, by Dr. T. Janakiram, 2014, p.155-156:] The first Phase of rose breeding was dominated by B.S. Bhatcharji, head of the well known nursery at Deogarh (on the border of Bengal and Bihar) who raised a very large number of varieties between 1941 when the first one, 'Ramakrishna Dev' was introduced, and 1968. The main objective of his work was to raise new varieties for the tropics.
