The region of Alsace (Elsass) was part of Germany from 1870 - 1918.

Schmitt, the other from Strasbourg, Mr. Färber, have established two beautiful rose gardens. The range of the former contains 500 standard roses and many dwarfs, most of them correctly labeled. Besides these we saw some novelties obtained by M. Schmitt via artificial fertilization: these are five different varieties of
rosa polyantha sarmentosa, of which the mother, belonging to the class of climbing roses....
