Thanks very much. I like this photo too, and it was one of my earliest rose photos, taken shortly after I started growing roses.

Your talent for growing roses is matched by your talent in photography! I noticed so many gorgeous photos from you that I visited your HMF Garden Gallery! There was too much to see all.....so I will have to return.

How long have you been growing and photographing roses?

In terms of actual years, I've only been growing roses since 2001. But having lived and breathed roses pretty much 24 hours a day since then, and with thousands of roses, it feels like it's been decades! My dad worked his way through college as a commercial photographer and we had a dark room in the house when I was a kid. So I've had an interest in photography all along. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments.

So beautiful! but why does it look so much more blue-purple than the other photos of Heirloom?

This actually is a pretty good representation of Heirloom in my yard--on my viewing screen. (Computer screen colors vary.) I took the picture with my old 35MM film camera. Some of my other pictures seem to come out a little more purple-y than the flowers actually are. It might also be more blue because of the rose food. Last summer I used Jackson & Perkins ONCE and I definitely noticed a difference in tones on several plants over the previous year's blooms. They seemed to be more coral-orange-y than the first year when I used the Ortho food. I didn't really like the production with ONCE and of course you cannot supplement it with more food from another company since that would over-do it. I'm going back to Ortho. I can't remember if this photo was taken during an Ortho year or a J&P ONCE year. Ha! Gettin' old.

Thank you for your very helpful response. I have just recently discovered the great joy of having roses (coming to them late in life.) Heirloom was one of my first roses, and I just love it! I know very little about fertilizing so I really appreciate your informative response. I will probably stick with my ortho fertilizer based on hearing of your results with J&P Once.

Thanks again.
