from 1994 until 2016, I had a large rose garden in my backyard in Minnesota. I specialized in ramblers and old world roses, having raised Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, and Polyanthas in previous places I lived.

I first winterized the roses in Minnesota by digging them up and putting them into a large trench. That went ok for a few years but I had so much die back I could not grow the roses to their potential height. So eventually, I used the nylon canvas 6 x 25 foot rolls with a center sealed layer of polyethylene which is a thermal blanket to set cement in areas where there are hard freezes. This was successful.

I retired to Southern California and now grow some delicate roses I have always wanted to grow plus some roses I received as gifts and some I have started by cuttings. The hybridizers during the heyday of hybridizing in Lyon, France have always fascinated me mostly for the romantic notion of the time, the place, and the dedicated love of roses.

I have one rose listed with the IRAR, “Sue Durkin”.

The cross between PAULS LEMON PILLAR X SOUVENIR de CLAUDIUS DENOYEL has begun to germinate. Today 3/18/2022. More seeds germinating now. As of 1/1/2023 only 3 plants of this cross survived.
2/23/2023 A cross from the above roses only in reverse germinated one seedling after a year.

The cross between PAUL’S LEMON PILLAR X PEACE has only produced one germinated seed. It did not survive.
