Hello I am new to this site and don't know much about roses. I have found some bugs on my 'UNKNOWN' rose can someone tell me what they are? I have spotted them only in a few places, I want to stop them before they spread. Also would a water and dish soap bath remove them? Thanks much!

The Website Links section has several links to websites specializing in diseases and pests.

Those are probably cast skins from aphids. Just wash them off with water. Aphids are ubiquitous with roses. A blast with the hose sends them far enough way that they have trouble climbing back up again.

Hello I am new to this website and know next to nothing about rose despite owning 2 of them. I hope someone can tell me what rose I have. We moved into this house, I can't quite remember, around 1989 and the rose was already here. It looked to me to be "full grown" so I don't know how many years it had already been here. The scent is what I would call a strong rose smell (dont' know if that helps). I showed my photos to the Master Gardeners answering questions at the Garfield Conservatory (IL). They told me it was a climbing rose and said I should send my question in to uiuc.edu for help. I emailed and Greg Stack (Extension Educator, Horticulture Matteson Extension Center) was able to tell me he thought is was possibly Portland rose called Rose de Rescht. I was hoping someone could give me a more definite answer. Thanks much!

Unfortunately, it is usually much easier to say what a rose is not, than what it is. I can say that this is nor Rose de Resht, which has much darker mauve to violet blooms. I do not think it is a Portland-type either: on your second photo the blooms seem to have longer stalks (Portlands have only very short ones). It would help if you could add more detailed photos of the canes and foliage.

Any help is still help even if it is just eliminating possibilities. I have 3 more pics that I hope will help. It will be blooming soon and I will also measure the flowers. I really appreciate your help.

It reminds me of my '?Charles Lawson?'.
My bushes are 6-7 ft tall, with lax canes and straight thorns lower down, but the upper branches seem reasonably thorn free. I never prune it, only ever cutting out any dead canes right at the base. It has soft foliage and blooms of lavender pink, very cupped by the outer petals and flattened in a dense swirl. There is a pointel of pale yellow-green in the center. The leafy, foliated sepals cradle the flower and a bud is a very pretty thing. The flowers come in clusters and when the temperature rises a little and rain falls, those clusters can be a nest of pink and brown as the outer petals stick and refuse to let the flower open. I can only advise you to walk quickly past then, and wait for the last blooms when the weather is dry. Then – it is a rose to die for.

I just looked at pictures of the 'Charles Lawson' and it sure does look like my rose. I wonder if it really is it. Is there some way I can confirm or rule out this possibility? Thanks for your help!

Does it flower just in spring/early summer, or does it flower later as well?

Hi! It only flowers just the once. Which is sad as I just love the smell of the flowers.

I have some more detailed photos. I don't know what other information to give to help with identify my rose. Whatever help anyone can give it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Your rose may be one of the forms of 'Banshee'.
