....In February, 1829.- Duc de la Rochefoucault Liancourt; rose très grande, très pleine (Prov.). Guillaume le Conquérant; cramoisi très foncé-velouté et maculé de feu et de blanc moyenne, très pleine (Prov.). Ma Pupille; hybride de R. semperflorèns, couleur ardoise, extrêmement pleine, moyenne. Jeanne Hachette, pale rose Damas, très pleine, très grande. Mousseuse Zoé. Mousseuse Partout; sur le bois, sur les épines, sur et sous les feuilles: lorsque l'arbre est vigoureux, ses feuilles, qui ont une teinte pourpre pendant les mois de Mai et Juin, ressemblent à celles du l'orme à feuilles crispées. Mousseuse rouge; extrêmement double, son bois ressemble à celui du Rosier Pimprenelle (Scotch rose). Admiral Nelson; rose très grande, très double (Prov.) Comte de Vandes; rose très grande et très double. Constance Zacarias; rose très grande, et très double (Prov.). La Normande; rose, très double grande (Prov.). In "Notes taken during a Twelve Days' Tour in Brittany and Normandy, in July 1841," by T. Rivers, Jun.:
I noticed in the rose nurseries here the effect of increased light and heat on the petals of some China roses. In this family are some varieties originating in a semidouble rose, well know to amateurs as chameleon, or Rosa indica mutabilis: Archduke Charles, Etna and Rubens are the finest of these changeable roses. In England, these are, on their first opening, a pale rose, then deep rose, and the second day, if the weather is dry, crimson, more or less deep. At Angers, the weather warm and dry, their flowers in the third stage were nearly black. I was much interest with the mélange of black, red, and blush on the same bush; this peculiarity in those few varieties is the more remarkable, as it is quite the reverse of what takes place in the generality of roses: the brilliancy of their colouring in almost all cases, fading under bright sunshine.

Ròsa damascèna Mill, (Damask rose). This species, one of the most common in gardens, is a native of the Levant, and was introduced to Britain as early as 1573. It is powerfully and agreeably fragrant, and is the kind most used for making the attar, or essential oil of roses. The varieties are numerous and exceedingly beautiful. Some of the finest are Grand Cels, belle Auguste, Swiss, Quatre seasons, Bonaparte, Rose du Roi, Garnet striped, and York and Lancaster.

Sophie de Baviere; presque blanche, moyenne, très pleine (R. álba). Bengal Darius; écarlate, très pleine, moyenne. Princesse de Nassau; hybride de Rose muscade et de R. Noisette, blanche, double, moyenne.
