'Editor McFarland' and 'Golden Dawn' have made fine plants for me on Texas Wax. The best plant of 'Mrs. Sam McGredy' that I have was budded on an extremely vigorous plant of 'Texas Wax'.

While 'Manetti' is a fine understock for the darker Hybrid Teas... it is fast being raplaced by 'Japanese Multiflora' and 'Odorata'... Almost all roses do well here [Oakland, California] on 'Ragged Robin', and seem to thrive on half the water necessary for 'Odorata'...
p. 57: 'Odorata' is one of the two stocks that I will always keep available for budding. Maiden plants on 'Odorata', grown properly with lots of water, make wonderful plants...

When we have a warm spring, Ragged Robin roots readily and makes good plants by budding-time; but if we have a cold spring, 'Ragged Robin' is almost a total loss... Almost all roses do well here [Oakland, California] on 'Ragged Robin', and seem to thrive on half the water necessary for 'Odorata'...

Golden Emblem, still the best yellow rose in California, never does make a good union with 'Manetti', and usually dies out in two to three years, unless it makes its own roots above the union.

R. californica although it proved almost impossible for budding purposes, I found it very easy to graft. Root-grafts were very successful if planted deep enough to discourage sucker growth. Roses like 'La France', 'Mme. Butterfly', and 'Radiance' did wonderfully well on it.

Mme. Edouard Herriot budded on 'Manetti' shows better growth and will give more blooms, especially on a well-established plant, than when budded on any other stock...
