The poet Martial (ca. AD 40-102) refers to the fact that "roses in winter bear the highest price", and it seems that the 'Autumn Damask Rose' was grown in Egypt and transported to Rome to maintain the supply during winter. This same rose, a cross between R. gallica and R. moschata, was mentioned by Virgil (ca. 70-19 BC) as the twice-flowering rose of Paestum. It was also found in frescoes at Pompeii.
