Dr. A. S. Thomas.  Rosae et Cetera.
The rose Chateau de Clos Vougeot (Pernet-Ducher, 1908) was very popular in Australia forty and more years ago largely for its deep red colour and strong perfume.  The bush itself lacked vigour but the climbing sport was excellent.  It won many prizes in the classes for "decorative roses".  The variation in its name from that of the castle is strange when the raiser himself was French and lived not very far away.  I could not find any plants of the rose at the chateau or in the village of Vougeot nearby.
Book  (1978)  Page(s) 51.

L. C. Longley, Rainham, Kent. Memories of a Rose Grower.
'Chateau de Clos Vougeot', possibly as dark as any rose, was a very short grower but all the decorative exhibitors tried their hardest to show it. They failed but could not understand why we always had a good vase or stand. The secret was that you had to cut full blown flowers.

Les hivers tout particulièrement rudes de 1938-39, 1939-40, 1940-41 et 1941-42 ont, aussi, bien contribué à la disparition des variétés fragiles, à bois creux, telles que : Château de Clos Vougeot, E.
