I recommend this rose for those who are after a true damask fragrance.

Since Quatre Saisons has not proved reliably remontant in my climate, and because I have only a small garden, I have been looking to replace it with a repeat flowering rose that would give me the same scent. I have tried some from the Portlands group, and the fragrance of Comte de Chambord (unlike Indigo and Jacques Cartier) proved, to my nose, very similar to the true damask fragrance of Quatre Saisons.

Interestingly, the colour of the bloom and texture of the petals of these two roses are also very close in appearance.

Disclaimer: The above remarks apply to the rose sold as Comte de Chambord in the UK, and to how it performs in a pot in my English climate!

After 7 days of constant rain, I got my first bloom. It wasn't damaged by rain. With gypsum (calcium sulfate), I get perfect blooms for the past 2 years. The repeat is very good, at least 2 flushes for my zone 5a. The scent smells like Tabu perfume - a complex blend of many scents: spice, myrrh, damask, and lavender. The lavender note comes out in warm temp., and the spice and myrrh come out in cool temp. This rose has divine scent, and worth growing for its being compact, doesn't take up much space, plus safe tiny thistles. I like it so much that I ordered another one.

how do you enter in fragrance classes? i've heard judges try to avoid them because they don'[t know how to judge them.

I think it would depend on the show you enter. there aren't always fragrance classes, but in some shows there are. check with your local rose society for the best information here. hopefully you are a member of the American Rose Society too. enjoy!
