p24 Hayden Foulds. Looking Back. 'Maestro' (Mackinju) One of the handpainted roses from Sam McGredy from the early 1980s. The colour and patterning is unlike any of the other handpainted roses and the health generally good. However the need for this plant to be elsewhere was much greater so it was shipped off to Georgina Campbell's McGredy rose collection outside Hastings a few years ago. It is thriving in its new home.

Don Sheppard. Final Analysis 1988-89.
'Maestro'. MACkinju; McGredy 1981; blends of red; 29 reports; 36 bushes; 1-5 years; 1.3rn; 6.7 rating.
Over the testing period all reporters have remarked on the unusual, eyecatching blends of reds, which they like. Interesting, intriguing, fascinating and beautiful are four of the adjectives used. The family tree far too long and complicated to reprint here - certainly ensured that something novel would be forthcoming! It tends to be rather more clustered flowered than a typical HT in its habit. From many parts of the country reporters complain about weak necks and it needs sun to show its colours to best advantage. Some say repeat is good, others that it could be faster, but all agree that it is a healthy, novel rose for the garden anywhere in the country.
