Another beautiful garden I had the pleasure of seeing was that of Sir Heaton Rhodes at Tai Tapu...
I was under the impression that Alister Stella Gray was a dwarf-growing climber, about six feet high, but in this garden I saw a specimen climbing up an oak more than thirty feet, and it was splendid.

The Climbing Noisette roses, which grow to perfection in the light soils of California's coastal region, are all of them old-fashioned, dating back as far as 1830...Mme. Alfred Carrière, with blush-white flowers, Chromatella, Rêve d'Or, William Allen Richardson and Alister Stella Gray or Golden Rambler, all with yellow flowers, are all equally good.

Noisette Roses
We offer here a selection of this old and very beautiful class of Roses, mostly of climbing habit, although a few of the older bushy type are included. The flowers are usually of the much-desired yellow and coppery shades and are uniformly fragrant. Recommended to our southern friends.
Alister Stella Gray. (Gray, 1894.) Pale yellow blooms, with orange center shading to white, are produced in clusters. Plant a vigorous and free-flowering climber.
A favorite old-time Noisette, now rather rare, greatly admired for its charming pale yellow flowers.

Pillar Roses
I give a list, necessarily a very inadequate one, of climbing roses of special merit for pillars.

Roses Worth While for Everybody by George C. Thomas, Jr.
For climbing roses in the South, while the Wichuraiana and hardy Climbers will do well, their blooming season is so short compared with other roses which may be grown that they are not recommended.
There are so many well-known Climbing Teas, Noisettes, and Climbing Hybrid Teas which give good results and from which bloom may be expected during the entire growing season, that it is not considered advisable to recommend as yet some of the newer European introductions of supposedly hardy roses which are put out as being of everblooming habit.
Alister Stella Gray. Noisette. Deep yellow with lighter edges; flowers in clusters.

Climbing Tea and Noisette Roses
These are the Roses which make such a glorious display in the warmer sections of the country, covering porches, pergolas and trellises with their handsome foliage and gorgeous flowers.  Those marked H. will be found hardy even in the coldest climate if given protection during the winter, while those marked M. H. are moderately hardy and especially valuable for open-ground culture south of Philadelphia and in California.
