A Gold Medal and the President’s International Trophy were awarded to ‘Matangi’, a most interesting vigorous floribunda by Sam McGredy [(‘Little Darling’ x ‘Goldilocks’) x [‘Evelyn Fison’ x (R. x Coryana x ‘Tantau’s Triumph’)]] x ‘Picasso’. The rather flat flowers have four whorls of petals, which are a clear fiery vermilion in colour, some petals showing the paler edges associated with ‘Picasso’. The fading petals drop cleanly and the dark glossy foliage is very healthy indeed. It will be remembered that R. x coryana was a Hurst hybrid raised from R. macrophylla x R. roxburghii so its genetical make-up is very interesting.

The only Gold Medal awarded and also the President's Trophy went to 'Matangi' one of the "hand painted" varieties from Sam McGredy Roses International, illustrated in the 1974 Rose Annual. It well deserved the award, having been healthy throughout the trial in spite of being surrounded by varieties affected by disease, and in late October it was still carrying a mass of blooms, which is one of the particular attributes of its parent 'Picasso'.

p17. 'Matangi'. (McGredy, 1974). Another exclusive first Australian McGredy release and a very promising newcomer. Colour is bright orange scarlet and white bi-colour. The white streaks often run around the edge of each petal creating a quite bizarre effect. Extremely vigorous, healthy and free flowering. The double blooms of the tremendous 'Matangi' are quite distinct. McGredy also includes this in his series of what he terms the "hand-painted" rose and this also won Trial Ground Certificate in Great Britain.
