Forty Niner.  HT.  (Swim, 1949)  Average height.   Deep Orient red with a yellow reverse, making a brilliant colour contrast.  Named after the men who took part in the Californian gold rush of 1849 and, as the rose was sent out in 1949, the name is particularly apt.  Very good.

Tzigane.... Unlike Forty-niner the colours are always good.

FORTY NINER (Swim 1949). ....Grande fleur bicolore rouge foncé à revers jaune.
Book  (1956)

p14.  Dr. A. S. Thomas.  New Roses Since 1948.
Forty-niner  is a huge bi-coloured rose;  most of the blooms are of good form and the growth is vigorous.

p127.  F. J. Melville,  Tasmania
Forty-niner. A dramatic bi-colour - it dulls to a brick red at times.  One of a half-dozen blooms has been fit for exhibiting, but fear it will quarter as a rule.

p133.  Dr. A. S. Thomas.  Origins.
Forty-niner, HT (Swim 1949),  Sutter's Gold HT (Swim 1950), and  California Centennial HT (Howard 1949) all commemorate the centenary of the discovery of gold in California.
Book  (1954)

p130.  Mr. W. H. Tustin, Invercargill, N.Z.
Forty-niner has shown plenty of growth and produced very attractive blooms. A red and straw bi-colour, which appears to be sensitive to climatic conditions, the red "blueing" if over-exposed to sunshine.

p131.  Otago Rose Society, N.Z.
Forty-niner  Brilliant bi-colour, cherry red with gold reverse;  good grower.

p145.  Mr Harry Bennett, Te Kowhai, N.Z.
Forty-niner. Red-yellow bi-colour.  Very strong;  some rave over it, others think colour unattractive.

p149.  Mr. F. H. Vincent, Manurewa, N.Z.
Tzigane is the best of them [bicolours] as a double purpose rose, having colours resembling those of Forty-niner, but the flowers are not as coarse and the colours do not fade as readily.
Book  (1953)

p135.  Mr. Jim Bennett, N.Z.
Firty-niner  This variety cannot be faulted, except for the indifferent colour of an occasional bloom.

p143.  Mr. E. Fisher Van der Veen,  Christchurch, N.Z.
Fortyniner: Moderate growth and small dark green foliage. Blooms bright red with a straw yellow reverse. I don't like bi-colours, but this one is too good to pass over.

p145.  Mrs. F. J. Guinan, Wellington, N.Z.
Anyone considering adding Forty-niner to his garden would be wise to see a bloom before ordering in case the colour combination does not appeal. At times it is really striking and brilliant; on other occasions it is dull and disappointing.
