Sarah Van Fleet. H. Rug. (Van Fleet, 1926) A.R.A.. 1926; P.P., 1928. With us this has been a very find shrub, with large, fragrant flowers of clear color, much more desirable than Belle Poitevine which it resembles in many respects. Cross calls is desirable, with good foliage, sweet perfume, and clear pinK color. Hamblin says it is very good, deep rose-pink, darker than Conrad Ferdinand Meyer, and not so rampant. Yeager states that it killed back in winter in South Dakota, but has produced fairly good blooms each year.

Shrub Roses
Sarah Van Fleet. (Dr. W. Van Fleet, 1926.) The plant is of erect and spreading habit, with medium green Rugosa-type foliage. It is a vigorous grower, very hardy, with flowers having three to four rows of petals, opens flat, shows stamens; color, mild rose-pink; form, cupped; fragrance, moderate; bud, medium size; petalage, twenty to thirty; freedom of bloom and lasting quality, excellent. The Rose is distinct from all the Rugosa hybrids in purity of color and continuity of flowering, and is considered as a decided improvement in the race.
This is the official description. In our estimation it is a good Rugosa of the familiar type with strong, disease-resistant foliage and sturdy growth. Its claim to distinction lies in the clear pink color of its flowers which lacks the objectionable reddish purple shade so common in Rugosas and in its intense, delicious fragrance which is fully equal to that of the Moss Rose. $2 each.

SARAH VAN FLEET. Seule a fleuri. C'est un Rugosa hybride, issu de Rugosa X My Maryland ; à fleur demi-double rose eglantine foncé, devenant plus pâle au plein soleil. Plante très vigoureuse.

It is a pleasure to announce that the third introduction, made available for propagation in the spring of 1926, and for general distribution in the spring of 1927, is a new Hybrid Rugosa named Sarah Van Fleet, in honor of the Doctor's wife, who may be noted standing beside the rose named for her in the picture published as Plate X, facing page 48.
