I wonder if any of you experts out there can help me. I bought my father who is very ill a small bunch of roses from Waitrose and he loves them so much I would like to track down the variety and buy a bush if possible. They are described as Long Stem Kenyan Roses (P) and when in bud they look white with a dark pink edge to the petals - when they open they come out dusky pink inside. They have small glossy leaves and small but sharp thorns. Not much to go on but if you can help....

What affect does a hard freeze have on roses after they have put forth new leaves?
Will they come back and how long should we wait before replacing them?

I have the same question as well. I'd already pruned (we had weather in the 80s) and then we have a sudden cold snap (in the 20s). I had a lot of die back and all the new growth turned limp. Does anyone have suggestions for how to handle this? I've recovered them with burlap to keep the frost off.

Around 1953 we moved into a home that had two rose bushes.  They were very dark red, thick velvety petals, tight blooms, dark green  shiny leaves, and very very very fragrant.  I have been  searching for them for years.Does  anyone  have any idea of their name and where I could find them.

I'm no expert on old roses by any means. Take a look at Chrysler Imperial and Mirandy to see if one of them match.

You could also do an advanced search. Forego trying to pick the type of rose. I would put in ARS color medium red, dark red, red blend. And then under 'breeder' you can enter bred before '1952'. That should bring up a fair amount of canidates.

Good Luck

If you click on the "Awards" menu item to the left, you will bring up a search page for rose awards. You can elect to view the awards by name by selecting the alphabetical search. I found several awards with the word "fragrance" in them and clicked on the link. When you open the award page, you can click on the tab to list the roses which have won that particular award.

As you can see, there are a lot of very fragrant roses ! To me, it would be impossible to pick only one rose as "the most fragrant."

Smiles,

Lyn
