How can I import a rose to the US?

Importing roses to the US is a bit of a hassle. US gardeners are not required to have an import permit to order from nurseries in Canada. When ordering from nurseries anywhere else, a permit is required. To obtain a permit form, write to: Permit Unit, USDA, PPQ, Federal Building, Room 638, Hyattsville, MD 20782. You'll also have to find a nursery overseas that is willing to ship to the US -- not all do. There's a chance the plant might expire during the course of the trip and the nursery will not be responsible for that. Assuming the rose arrives alive, once you've planted it, it must be quarantined (an agent will make spot visits to make sure everything is copasetic!) for two years. Eventually, many roses from overseas make their way to these shores. Oftentimes, varieties from overseas show up in Canadian nurseries first and you can import from Canada without a permit or hassle.
