In my garden this is always the first rose to start and the last to finish.

This year it is over here a neck to neck race between Cuthbert Grant and Rosa hugonis.

Having a good look at my roses yesterday, it looks like 'Anges' will beat 'Madame Alfred Carriere' to be the first rose to flower this year. Last week's scorching temperatures have now been replaced by torrential rain and possible snow this weekend.

I'm at my computer watching the BBC programme Gardeners' World. Yes from your picture it still looks rather bleak. Here beech and oak trees are just coming into leaf and apple and pear trees in flower.

Great programme Andrew. I've watched it a few times and there was one episode a few years back when the dark haired lady did heritage roses. The love she had for those roses was palpable and that episode should be on every heritage rose website as required viewing for new devotees. Unfortunately I now have no idea of exactly which episode it was but I seem to remember that she had a tiny child tottering between the roses which made it all the more delightful to watch.

I think I remember that episode Patricia, I'll try and find it on YouTube. Jay-Jay, more important than anything else 'Erinnerung an Brod' has 15 flower buds developing!

I missed this comment. Likewise, I missed the developing buds on Mme. Alfred Carrière and on Abraham Darby... both "early-birds" too. Enjoy E. an B.
