Origin:
Bred by Barbier Frères & Compagnie (France, 1900).
Class:
Hybrid Wichurana, Rambler.  
Bloom:
Cream, light yellow center, ages to white .  Moderate, green apple, tea fragrance.  Average diameter 2.75".  Medium, semi-double (9-16 petals), borne mostly solitary, in small clusters, globular, quartered bloom form.  Spring or summer flush with scattered later bloom.  
Habit:
Climbing, thornless (or almost).  Glossy foliage.  
Height of 15' to 25' (455 to 760 cm).  Width of 10' to 12' (305 to 365 cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 4b through 9b.  Very vigorous.  shade tolerant.  Disease susceptibility: very disease resistant.  Requires spring freeze protection (see glossary - Spring freeze protection) .  Can be grown in the ground or in a container (container requires winter protection).  Prune after flowering is finished.  Remove unproductive wood every third year or so.  
Notes:
The original descriptions of 'Albéric Barbier' are for a semi-double, medium size bloom on almost prickless canes. This does not fit with the plant with large, full blooms on prickly canes sold today.

At the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 'Alberic Barbier's soft canes have been trained on pillars and swags.
