In some photos, I can see a lot of traits in common with Rosa canina. That species was often found in cultures that also had gallica roses. Would not be surprised of Complicata had either Canina or Alba ancestry in it somewhere.

What do you think about the possible Macrantha ancestry?

I have only seen Macrantha once in my life. A long time ago, so I can't point out the traits exactly.
Same for Rosa arvensis.

Does anyone know whether this rose suckers? Mine is three or more years in the ground, and still no suckering.

Thanks , I'm hoping mine will. Charles de Mills and Tuscany Superb are suckering in the same bed, so hopefully Complicata will too.

Complicata will not sucker quite as much as the other two.

I'm pretty sure mine is on its own roots, but I can't remember where I got it!
