The Friends of Vintage Gardens describe this rose as a hybrid china. See the Vintage Garden Book of Roses (2006) p. 30.

I can't help wondering just how hardy this cultivar really is. Is there any record of its' being successfully grown in USDA zones 5 or 4b?

All the early sources agree that 'Alexandre Laquement' is a gallica. The question is whether the rose at Vintage Gardens was the original, or mislabeled.

The VG catalogue had a way of placing roses in categories not used by other authorities. For example, 'Mme. Plantier' was also called a hybrid China at VG; most nurseries and authorities of which I am aware call it an alba and consider it be a likely alba/Noisette hybrid.

I think AL is beautiful and I would like to grow it should it ever again become available, but I am wondering about its hardiness. If most authorities consider it a gallica, can I assume it has typical gallica hardiness?
