I bought this rose when I first started growing roses and knew nothing. It was a 'body bag' at Home Depot. I planted it on the corner of my front porch. Since there is some shade there, it took awhile for it to reach some height, but when the canes got into sunlight, they took off. Yes, it's a blackspot magnet, but so are many others in my yard. It always seems to be the first in bloom and always has some flowers. When there are many blooms my porch is filled with the honey-like scent. Mine is now 14 years old with big thick canes, but they put out 4 new canes last year. And it's still going strong.

When I was first tinkering with roses and going into it blind, I bought this one many years ago...not once, but twice. Fooled me. One of the worst....no, THE worst....of all the roses I have ever tried to grow for vigor. Constant black-spot magnet, wilts in full sun, and struggles in every aspect...and the blooms don't even hold their form well. After the first failed attempt, I thought of course, it is just my mistake...wrong. This is the only rose I have had that keeled on me twice or required digging. Then I discovered thriving hybrids like Autumn Sunset and Gold Medal . Perfect for Kansas climate-schizophrenia....frigid winters and hot droughty summers. Decent luck with Austin's if I am quick to spot and treat instantaneously appearing bug & bs magnet syndrome.

I got this at a grocery store as a dormant plant; as an OLD dormant plant with pale etiolated growth coming up desperately. I planted it at a corner; it lived. On the way to the park, it gets Golden Showers every day from passing dogs; it loves that nitrogen. I do water it and give it banana peels underneath its rock now and then. It does NOT die when everything else does-hooray!
