The Damask Rose (Rosa Damascena) is a native of Syria, from which country the single flowered variety was taken to England in 1573.  The name has not originated from the colour of the flower, as many suppose, but from the town of Damascus, large quantities of this species having been formerly grown in the gardens surrounding that place for the manufacture of Rose-water and attar of Roses.  The following varieties are the best:
La Ville de Bruxelles — A variety with large bright rosy pink flowers, vigorous in habit, and makes a fine pillar Rose.
