Some of the Wichuraiana varieties which had been improperly credited to W.A. Manda were rather the result of [M.H. Horvath's] efforts... for example Evergreen Gem and 'Universal Favorite'...

In a letter written to Secretary Hatton on August 16, 1939, Mr. Horvath, who had in the meantime looked up his old records, wrote thus:

"It was not in New Jersey where I was employed by the firm of Pitcher & Manda (also known as United States Nurseries) but after leaving P. & M., from where I went to Newport, R. I., that the birth of the Wichuraiana hybrids occurred. It was while I was absent from Newport, leaving my plants in charge of V. Vanicek, a friend of W. A. Manda, that the original hybrid plants were given to him, thus finding their way into commerce. Corrections may now be made, because I have found the record of the missing pollinate parent of the two pink hybrids. R. Wichuraiana X Agrippina gave two crosses, including Pink Roamer and South Orange Perfection. Two others, Manda's Triumph and Universal Favorite, resulted from crossing R. Wichuraiana X Paquerette, a small imbricate-petaled dwarf white Polyantha. Evergreen Gem is R. Wichuraiana X Maréchal Niel, and an old plant of this, I believe, is still growing on the back fence of my former home at Glenville, Ohio. It was there, incidentally, that one of the Barbier boys got his first lesson on Wichuraiana hybridization."

Hardy Climbing Roses
Evergreen Gem. Hybrid Wichuraiana. (W. A. Manda, 1899.) Yellow buds and rather small, double white flowers, in clusters on very vigorous trailing plants.
Midseason to late-flowering. Best used as a trailing Rose for embankments, walls, or fences, but can be trained to an arch or pillar.

Wichuraiana Hybrid Roses
Evergreen Gem
The buds of the Evergreen Gem Rose are buff, but open white, with a fragrance like the Sweetbrier. They come in clusters, the individual flowers being double, 2 or 3 inches across, and remaining upon the stems for a long time. This is one of the most vigorous climbers, and the dense, enchanting foliage of bronze-green causes it to be much sought for use in "planting out" unsightly objects. The plant puts forth leaves very early in the season, and they endure until after heavy frosts and often well into the winter. From this characteristic the variety secures its name, and this distinctive feature seems to be more marked in this variety than in other members of the Wichuraiana family. On this account it is valuable for planting as a screen- the foliage offering a pleasing contrast to the otherwise barren garden or lawn.
