Frédéric II Verdier, 1847. Synonym: Frédéric II de Prusse. Habit: more the habit of a china than of a Gallica; can attain 2 m height; few prickles and no bristles. Foliage: light green; elliptical and smooth leaflets. Bloom: in clusters of 2 to 3; double, however some visible stamens; outer petals quite large and reflexed; small central eye. Colour: the white base of the petals visible at the heart; the bloom itself, carmine-pink, more violet shaded on the edges. Fragrance: moderate....
This variety is almost always classed as a hybrid china, even as hybrid bourbon as Verdier himself did it. In fact, it is one of first trials of crossings between Gallicas and Chinas ....in which the characteristics of Gallicas are clearly shown. In the case of 'Frédéric II', the habit and foliage do not have a Gallica aspect; on the other hand, the bloom clearly is. Verdier describes it as "very large, almost full, violet-purple". ...

The Hybrid Bourbon (Rosa Bourboniana hybrida) is a splendid class, and embraces many fine flowers.  It originated from the Bourbon, which is itself supposed to be a hybrid.  They differ from the Hybrid China in having more substance in the leaves and flowers.  In the following selection will be found the leading varieties:
