Origin:
Bred by Lord Penzance (United Kingdom, 1895).
Introduced in Australia by Arthur Yates & Co. Ltd. in 1900 as 'Green Mantle'.
Class:
Hybrid Rubiginosa.  
Bloom:
Deep pink, white center.  Strong fragrance.  Average diameter 1.5".  Small to medium, single (4-8 petals), borne mostly solitary bloom form.  Occasional repeat later in the season.  Leafy sepals, long sepals buds.  
Habit:
Armed with thorns / prickles, climbing.  Small, glossy, dark green, fragrant foliage.  7 leaflets.  

Height: 6'7" to 19'8" (200 to 600cm).  Width: 5' (150cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).  Vigorous.

Notes:
The foliage smells like apples...
Greenmantle is a character in Sir Walter Scott's novel "Redgauntlet" (1824).
