Bred by Charles Mallerin (France, before 1937).
Introduced in France by Henri Guillot in 1937 as 'Guinée'.
Introduced in Australia by Hazlewood Bros. Pty. Ltd. in 1939 as 'Guinée'.

Class:

Hybrid Tea, Cl., Large-Flowered Climber.

Bloom:

Dark red, scarlet highlights. Strong, tea fragrance. Large, full (26-40 petals), borne mostly solitary bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Large buds.

Habit:

Climbing. Large, bronze-green foliage.

Height: 6½' to 18' (200 to 550cm). Width: up to 10' (up to 305cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).

Notes:

Tyler's Garden Centre says Guinee has very dark red, shaded black, double blooms.
The 1938 reference states the synonym 'Henri Quinard' as the pollen parent.
