[Author cites information from different sources. The Journal des Roses says: "One sees the name "Cartier" mentioned as this variety's breeder, but: "[It was a] seedling of Mons Pierre Cochet's, Suisnes rosarian, sold in 1855 by his two sons Philémon and Scipion."... "Dedicated to Mons Desprez's son-in-law..." The Revue Horticole says: for nearly his whole life Mons De Sansal was occupied with horticulture... But it was the rose which he held in special esteem, and he had a large and rich collection of them..."] Blackish maroon with fiery shadings... rich crimson-purple...

Portland shrub; dark purplish crimson, paler reverse; blooms freely borne, of medium size, double, flat, quartered; fair remontancy; growth upright, 42 x 28 in (100 x 70 cm); leafy, mildew likely; good scent. Said to be 'Géant des Batailles' seedling. Cochet, 1855.
