Book  (Jul 1998)  Page(s) 86.  Includes photo(s).

IMPÉRATRICE JOSÉPHINE. Descemet, before 1815. Habit: more arching than classical gallicas; 1,20 m high, 2 m spread; strong branches, few prickles, practically no bristles. Foliage: abundant, light; elliptical leaflets, very veined and serrated, characteristic of Francofurtana. Bloom: large, solitary or in clusters, double, quite globular, large petals, lightly ruffled, having a tendency to arrange themselves in quarters; stamens visible when the bloom has expanded. Colour: very light cherry-red, lightly veined at the centre, pink on the periphery, passing to dark lilac. Fragrance: very strong.
"Impératrice Joséphine" is often compared to "Agatha"... but its blooms are larges and more double; otherwise she is effectively quite similar.
...She was probably obtained by Descemet (consequently prior to 1815) from the Rosa x francofurtana...This origin is confirmed by Vibert...in his catalogue of 1819.
