I grew Aztec Gold for two years in zone 5b/6a Northwest Missouri after getting it bareroot from Regan Nursery.
The bush itself is quite attractive. Shiny "new penny" foliage that is a dark shade of green so it makes a stunning backdrop for the pure butter yellow flowers. I found the flowers to be very pretty. Not really exhibition quality, but a very good garden variety display and they lasted pretty well when cut for a vase.
Sorry, can't recall whether it was fragrant for me.
The blooms I got were very pretty solid deep butter yellow with no hint of other colors which is rather refreshing because it seems we are seeing fewer pure yellow color alot more nowadays.
I really liked this rose but unfortunately old man winter claimed it this past year. I don't normally winter protect roses here except for a couple of very rare cases. I have two large trees that drop their leaves and I just let them accumulate naturally and that seems to do a pretty good job protecting the roses from the cold. Last winter was unusually cold and nasty. I lost this rose which was very disappointing. It was absolutely healthy and vigorous going into winter so I am pretty sure it just must be too tender for my zone. Unfortunately many yellows seem to be that way.
