Lillian Nordica, née Norton (1857-1914) was an American soprano of the late 19th and early 20th century. She studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and then in Milan. She sang in England, Milan, St. Petersburg, Paris, New York, where she joined the Metropolitan Opera. She died after being shipwrecked in the South Seas, in the Gulf of Papua. She was the inspiration for Willa Cather's short story, "The Diamond Mine."
