Bloom:
Carmine-pink to mauve, yellow stamens. Mild fragrance. 5 petals. Average diameter 2". Single (4-8 petals), borne mostly solitary bloom form. Once-blooming spring or summer. Small, wide oval buds.
Habit:
Short, armed with thorns / prickles, bristly , upright. Small, matte foliage. 3 to 5 leaflets.
Height: 10" to 5' (25 to 150cm).
Growing:
Can be used for specimen. Prefers dry climates. Do not spray.

Notes:
Rosa stellata subspecies abyssa A.Phillips had been observed around the Grand Canyon since 1908. Its native range is more than 450 miles from the other members of R. stellata, in southeastern New Mexico. See References for links to images and herbarium specimen.
Subgenus Hesperhodos.
Subgenus Hesperhodos has two species: Rosa stellata and Rosa minutifolia. Rosa stellata in turn has three subspecies: stellata, mirifica and abyssa.
