i've had "white cap" in a pot for a few years and have always taken it in over the winter. it's an own root and was very slow to attain any size, so was reluctant to put it out when rather small and expect it to make it through my zone 5 new hampshire winter. this summer i decided to put it (finally) in the ground and it has done well, producing quite steadily a small amount of lovely flowers. today, to my surprise, i noticed that some of the leaves have turned a very attractive shade of gold! i thought only the rugosas did that.

I have a very limited space for growing climbers. Can I grow White Cap as a large free standing shrub?
Please help.

Marina, I grow mine as a free standing shrub. What did you decide to do with yours? I do see that your post is 4 years old! Gean

Gean, yes, I have my White Cap growing as a free standing shrub. I like it this way - large bush with strong arching canes, with blooms produced from almost every side bud.
I started growing it with a trellis but two or three years ago had to move it to another location. Pretty happy about it.
How is yours doing without support?

I have it growing with Clair Matin grown also as a shrub; the idea was for the rose canes to intertwine. CM does great as a shrub; WC, cut as a shrub, does fine also. The blooms on WC ball for me because of the wet drippy weather sometimes. But when they do open well, gosh, it's a nice rose.

White Cap is a very rewarding climber in my garden. It was slow to get established on its own roots. In its 3rd year it really started to grow and bloom. It has 4 flushes a year and scattered blooms in between. The blooms have an old fashioned form and a strong, fruity fragrance.

Paul,

I am in zone 9/ Sunset zone 19. I didn't notice that I had not filled that in on my garden listing. At first I was reluctant to grow hardy roses in my mild, temperate zone, but have found that they as a whole are very heat tolerant and do very well.

I agree with Debby's assessment of this rose. It took about three years for it to grow very much (my plant is on its own roots) but during that third year it threw up some great canes and bloomed continuously. The blooms come in nice clusters. I live in zone 5b and it comes through the winter with very little winter kill. One of my two favorite white climbing roses. Great for beginners and those of us who have grown roses for a few years.
