My interest in shrub roses was aroused some five or six years ago.  I had procured Herr Kordes' hybrid varieties Berlin, Bonn and Grandmaster and planted them along an irrigation channel where they thrived, and the flowering was so spectacular that I decided to try more varieties.

Berlin. HMsk. (Kordes, '49.) Eva X Peace. Bud long pointed; fl. large, single, fragrant, orange-scarlet, center golden; large cluster. Fol. leathery, dark; thorns large. Very vig., upright; profuse, intermittent bloom.

In 1952 came the first four of a new group of roses that Wilhelm Kordes is evolving as suitable for hedges or as specimen shrubs.  They were Berlin, Bonn, Elmshorn and Grandmaster - all can be recommended with confidence.
