This is one of my favorites of the "blue" roses. The plant is nicely shaped and needs just a little bit of help with disease control. Produces lots of fragrant blossoms throughout the year and survives zone 5b winters with flying colors. I highly recommend this rose.

We planted Blue Moon this year and each time the new buds begin to open, the edges are brown. When the flowers do open, they don't appear to be very strong and don't last long. Can anyone tell us what is wrong and how to correct it?

I think this is the nature of this rose bush. I grow it also and experience the same thing. It has thin canes, weak necks, NO fragrance...but I love the color. The brown edges could also be the result of fungal problems or thrips which are common in warm, humid climate.

It could be a couple of things in my experience. Firstly, check for thrips. They are tiny little insects that live in the blooms and literally suck the juice right out of them, leaving the petals to turn brown and wrinkle. They are about 1/2 the size of a flea and move very quickly inside the blooms so you have to be quick and look between petals. Secondly, the weather could be very hot which will brown the edges of alot of the lighter colored mauve roses. Third, I would check to be sure you are giving the rose plenty of water. IF it is hot and dry, that will shrivel a mauve bloom in no time flat. So, be sure you are waterig them enough and properly. Water at the base of the bush and not with an overhead sprinkler from the top that gets the new petals all wet. That will cause brown discoloration on many-but not all-of the lighter colored roses as well. Last, but least likely is a nutrition question. Are you fertilizing?? Are you OVER-fertilizing which can also burn and cause the blooms to suffer. Just a few thoughts. Good luck with them. John
