JJS, I was told this painting was done a hotel along the west coast of Denmark, that Kroyer and a group of other Danish artists visited often. It's a lovely painting.

The Krøyers were often in Skagen (which is just 2 kilometers from the most northern tip of Denmark). From 1891-1894 they rented a house, close to the sea at the west coast, just south of Skagen’s harbor, from Mr. Bendsen. It was in the backyard of this house where this painting and some other paintings of Krøyer’s wife were made.

JJS, thank you so much for the information, my Great Grandfather was one of Kroyer's students, and I've only heard that the artists gathered at a hotel in the area that had a garden behind it.

J, I forgot to ask you, would you know what roses grow near the coasts, in the hedgerows? A few paintings of my Great Grandfather show a single cerise colored rose. I can only assume they would be rugosa roses but are there other roses that grow in those coastal conditions?

The roses in his paintings are about 300-400 feet (91-120 meters) from the ocean's edge. He lived down near Nymindegab, in an old thatched fisherman's cottage.

Nowadays, the authorities consider rugosas as a weed that has to be controlled and indeed, rosa rugosa is almost everywhere along the danish coast. And apart from pimpinellifolia (not many though), I haven't seen any other roses but rugosas by the beach.
It would be nice to see some of your Great-Grandfather's paintings! Brøndums hotel (built in 1874) was indeed the meeting place of Skagen's artists.

JJS, I looked up your R. pimpinellifolia (the white Scots Rose), but I don't think he painted those. They must be those "weeds". The family did have quite a time with keeping the sand from eroding along the ocean side of the house.

I was trying to remember the name of the hotel, that's it! Yes, I'll have to post a picture of his (even though you can't make the roses out clearly.)
