May 8, 2016 in San Diego, California. Be sure you know what you are in for if you plant "Mermaid." This plant was a small, barely rooted cutting in September 2008, and thus is about 8 years old. It was planted to cover up an old decrepit 2-story playhouse, which it does admirably. But it is the most rampant growing rose there is. This one is trained up a single trunk, i.e., with all thorns and attempts to branch out cut off until it got to the height of the playhouse (approx 15 feet up), and it must be pruned at least every month to keep in control. I prune off everything that I can reach up to with my pruners at least once a month. I put the 32 gallon garbage can in the photo for scale.
