Ludvik Vecera is a very hardy climbing rose with bright red flowers. It doesn't grow very tall only about 8 or 9. It has a rose fragrance that is mild not strong. It is a cross with a Kordes rose called Dortmund which is also a bright red and very hardy. Here is a bookshop that carries a rose book written by ludvik Vecera. http://www.nostalgiabookshop.com/classic-roses-concise-guide-colour-p-2025.html Here is a man who grows this rose in his garden and perhaps he could tell you where you can get it. Maybe you could even get a cutting from him. http://www.frost-burgwedel.de/load_katrosen/show_8/index.html If all fails you may be able to get some budwood from Sangerhausen in Germany which has it in their collection. Here is a picture of Ludvik Vecera.

If New Dawn is happy, it can become a monster. Compassion has a very strong fragrance but the flowers are short lived and in the PNW it is very black spot prone. Sorry to be so negative. Here are a few that might appeal to you they do very well and should be fine for you in your zone. Plus all have a good fragrance in my garden. Aloha Morgengruss Rosy Mantle White Cap

La Ville de Bruxelles is a very large, tall bush and the flower are a light rose pink and the Duchesse has blowsy flower of a blush pink. However, from the shape and colour of the flowers, I think it may be the Gallica, Belle de Crecy. Here is a picture of my Belle de Crecy.

I have Princess Nassau in zone 7 and in partial shade. This rose makes a beautiful weeping bush with hundreds on icy white semi single flowers and blooms a long time. I would give this rose a place where it doesn't get the cold winter winds. It may die back but the rose is vigorous so it shouldn't die completely especially if you give it good protection the first winter. Here is a photo to show you the true colour.

New Dawn can be a very large climber even in your zone and the roots are invasive. Compassion is the right size and has a wonderful fragrance but the flowers don't last long and in the PNW is very prone to black spot. Sorry to be a carrier of such negative news. Have a look at these few and see if any appeal to you. All will do well for you without any problems and all (in my garden) are strong scented. Aloha Morgengruss Rosy Mantle White Cap
