I planted Secret just last summer, and it was a wonderful bloomer and they look just like the pics on hmf .... I live in the middle of Kansas, where the heat in August reaches 100 for several weeks at a time, but Secret~so far~managed to just keep blooming. Gorgeous scent, and I think the blooms remained on the stems for 4 or five days, before dropping. Well worth planting!!!

I have had Secret for three years now. I added a second one this year. By far one of the best roses I have grown. Very disease resistant, has turned into one of my favorites. I recommend to everyone that is looking to start growing roses...

I have a couple of questions about Secret rose:

     1)  I recently read that Secret rose loses its blooms quickly.  This has been my experience with mine so far -- the blooms didn’t even last 24 hours on the bush before they shrivelled.  However, mine is still in its first year, and there was an unusual heat wave not long after we planted it -- so maybe the quick shrivelling of blooms was due to stress, or to not being thoroughly established yet.  Can anyone tell me how long Secret’s blooms normally last on the bush, in your experience?

     2)  I read that Secret prefers cooler climates, or partial shade in hot climates.  I live in an area with hot summers – zone 9, I think.  My Secret is currently in a spot that gets morning sun to midafternoon sun, with shade in the late afternoon.  I’m thinking of moving it to a spot that gets about 3-4 hours of afternoon sun per day, with shade the rest of the time.  Can anyone tell me in which of these two spots Secret is likely to do better in my hot area?

     Thank you.

I think you are correct in stating that heat caused your blooms to blow so quickly.  I had pretty much the same experience and now that our weather has cooled off significantly, the blooms seem to last forever.

As for planting 'Secret' where it gets more shade, I have some reservations based upon my own experience with growing this roses with more shade than sun.  I had fewer blooms and the bush was awkward and gangly.  Since summer is a lot shorter where I am now gardening, I planted 'Secret' where she will get at least 6  hours of sunlight.  I expect the blooms to blow quickly on all of my roses when the temps are up into the triple digits.  However, I love this rose in the spring and fall.

Thank you for your reply. In that case, can you recommend any roses that WOULD do well in my 3-4 hours afternoon-sun spot?  I plant only disease-resistant roses, and I prefer continuous or frequently-recurring (and long-lasting) bloom whenever possible.Carolyn

These are my personal views:

I'd like to suggest the old stand-by 'Iceberg'.  It can handle shade and brings a little light to a shade garden.  It is much less disease prone if you do not prune it hard.  It's a nice landscape rose.  I can't say it won't blow in the heat, most roses do, but there is a reason it is used so much.  It's a good rose.

How is your Secret performing now that the temps have cooled?

Mine is in all day sun and unless it is really hot it does just fine (zone 6).

So far, I've only had one flush of bloom on my Secret since I planted it (the one that shrivelled the same day).  Now that temperatures are fairly cool, it's finally getting new growth in several places.  So, I'm hopeful that I'll have my second flush of bloom soon.  The foliage has stayed looking good, for the most part.

Oct 07 I agree that ICEBERG is wonderful for shady areas of the garden! i've also had good luck with GOURMET POPCORN, a rather mini-type of white rose. Ours is now 3ft high! The night lights
on our balcony nicely feature the blooms. Also the FAIRY series of mini-type roses do well in lesser amounts of sunshine. My CRYSTAL FAIRY came from OSH in Silicon Valley, CA.

Secret rose has beautiful pink and white flowers, a wonderful sweet-spicy fragrance, and lush healthy foliage. Mine hardly bloomed the first year, when we had a major long heat wave shortly after it was planted. But it had a pretty good first flush this spring (its second year), and the second flush it's working on now looks like it will be even better.
