Stephen Treseder & Son, Ely Nurseries, Ely, Cardiff.
The Treseder family are of Cornish descent. The founder of the firm, Stephen, the son of a nursery man, emigrated to Australia in 1849 at the age of 16, joined in the gold rush at that time and endured many hardships. Returning to this country he acquired, in 1869, the business of Matthews Nursery in Cardiff adjoining the land which is now Victoria Park. This land was soon taken over for housing, and owing to the mushroom-like growth of Cardiff the firm had to move outwards no fewer than five times in 55 years. In the early nineties two young men from Cranston’s of Hereford (later Kings Acre) joined the firm: Charles Fox as foreman rose grower and Thomas Dance as his assistant; the latter remained with the firm for 53 years and worked with four generations. “Charlie” Fox specialised in Teas and had few equals as an exhibitor of Box blooms and was well known at the leading shows at that time. Stephen Treseder was succeeded in 1898 by his son Arthur, who was a keen rose grower. In 1933 the latter’s son Arthur Ronald became the owner of this well established business, and he, with his son Ian, who rejoined him in 1945 after overseas service are both keen growers and exhibitors, and are often seen staging throughout the night until judging time in the morning....
