Kanaka Greenhouses is a wholesale, cut-rose greenhouse operation growing thirty rose varieties. Their roses is not available retail directly from the greenhouse, but instead are shipped through a local flower auction to wholesalers and retailers around the world. In the United States, you can find Kanaka Greenhouse roses in the Pacific Northwest.
Kanaka Greenhouses is located in the Fraser Valley just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia. Kanaka has been family-owned and operated for over 31 years and is recognized as a rose industry lader in British Columbia.
In 1967, owners Chris and Mieke Duyvestyn emigrated to British Columbia from Holland, where they had learned the art of growing beautiful roses. Their son, Martin, and daughter, Nikki, are also part of the Kanaka management team.
Kanaka Greenhouses produces three million roses in their 179,200 square foot state-of-the-art glass greenhouse every year. And what a greenhouse it is! The environment within the greenhouse is computer-controlled. The computer monitors and directs the heating system, cooling vents and fans, and even the irrigation system. Supplemental lighting improves production and enhances the overall quality of the roses. During the summer months, ceiling screens shade the plants. These same screens help to conserve energy in the winter. Carbon dioxide, a byproduct from a hot water boiler system, is recycled to improve production and quality. Roses are grown hydroponically, that is in an environment without soil. By using a hydroponic system, all aspects of the plants' conditions, nutrients and diseases can be controlled.
