Seventy-seven years ago a young man started growing roses in a very small way and his head and only man during those early efforts was Henry Nevard. This young man – he was Mayor of Colchester in 1911 – was Frank Cant who founded the Braiswick Rose Gardens, Colchester.....He was succeeded in the business by his two sons and a daughter. After World War 1, more land was secured at Elmstead where many prize winning roses were grown, especially the Box varieties in which “F.S.” excelled. Clifford, the second son died in 1944 and Frank Sydney, alas last year. The present directors are Mrs M. G. N. Harvey-Cant (Sydney’s widow), C. F. Roberts, A. M. Blythe, C. F. Bland and L. J. Blyth.....

[From The Gardener's Chronicle, 1930, p. 95:] The Sudbury (Suffolk) Gardeners' and Amateurs' Association paid a visit to the new headquarters of Messrs. Frank Cant and Co., Ltd., at Stanway, near Colchester, during July. This business was established by the late Alderman Frank Cant and was formerly centred at Braiswick, on the north-west side of Colchester. The Principals, Captain F.S. Harvey Cant and Mr. C. Harvey Cant, who gave the invitation....
