p65. Rasmussen's Ltd. was established by the late Mr. C. C. Rasmussen in 1905 at Aramoho, Wanganui.....In 1928 a start was made in shifting the Nursery to its present site in Flemington Road, Upper Aramoho. On the death of the founder, Mr. C. C. Rasmussen in 1937, management was taken over by his son-in-law, Mr. Tom Kennedy....As the soil and climate in the Upper Aramoho area of Wanganui is well suited to roses, Mr. Tom Kennedy decided to specialise in them, so in the early 1950s this decision was implemented. In the 1960s a further step was taken to aid this specialisation, they became a 'Wholesale Only' nursery. When Mr. Tom Kennedy retired in 1970, his son Bruce took over the reins and is now the present manager. His nursery has 34 acres under cultivation, using a permanent staff of eight, including two fourth generation members of the family. This staff swells in number to around twenty in the Winter season, when plants are lifted and distributed to retailers around the country. Rasmussen's Ltd. specialise in standard roses, and at present supply about 85% of all sold in New Zealand. They bud approximately 70,000 per year.
