Geoffrey Barker. Faults and Foibles.
Another very dark red, indeed I have seen blooms almost black, is 'Charles Mallerin', but its habit of growth has much, very much to be desired. It seems to specialize in having two main shoots, one very long and the other very short, like a tick. Most inelegant.

Charles Mallerin  Medium  Dark red. Remontant. P6. H1
Francis Meilland paid his old tutor the compliment of naming this dark red rose after him.  It was the kind Charles Mallerin might himself have raised, the quality of colour extended to its deepest expression, while the rest of the plant was less admirable. It had a habit of growing straight up on one or two shoots, and the only reason to grow it was for the velvet red flowers that sought to be black. Raised from ('Glory of Rome' x 'Congo') x 'Tassin', and introduced in 1947. The books usually say 1951, which was the date in the United States.

‘Charles Mallerin’ (Meilland), 1947. (Glory of Rome x Congo) x Tassin. The blooms have forty petals and are of darkest crimson with a black sheen and possess a rich fruity perfume. But it is not a strong grower and should be grown only where it can be given the time to do it well. Exhibition. (A).

'Charles Mallerin'. Hybrid Tea. (Pat. 933) 3 - 4 feet. (sharl mall-RANH)
Great bouquets of 'Charles Mallerin' delighted Will Tillotson, and perfumed the large room where he wrote. . . "I will risk an argument with anybody, by stating that 'Charles Mallerin' is my favorite among the modern red Hybrid Tea bush roses . . . I challenge anyone to come upon, it unexpectedly, without a spontaneous exclamation! It is a typical man's rose. . . the darkest of reds. . . as big as 'Peace', with more distinctive, velvety reflexed petals . . . a stem to delight a florist . . . a bouquet to make a lady happy."
"This rose made a rosarian of my husband with one bloom. . . something I have been unable to do in 21 years of marriage." Vivian Friedberg, Galveston, Texas. 3 for $6.60 each $2.50

Charles Mallerin and Rouge Meilland are grown fairly frequently. Both can give exhibition blooms, but too few in proportion to their lanky growth.
